What are the training days allocated for new students ?
Training days for beginners are allocated on the following day:
SATURDAY (3.30pm – 5:00pm)
- Minimum 7-years of age. Parents should ensure that their children are able to take instruction from senseis (ie. Instructors). There is no such thing as being too old for Kendo.
- A strong interest in Kendo.
Where is the dojo located?
- The dojo (roughly translated as a "training place") is located within the premises of the JAPAN CLUB OF KUALA LUMPUR (JCKL). JCKL is a privately owned club and all Kendo members MUST apply for a JCKL membership in order to use the dojo.
When are the new intakes for beginners?
- We have THREE intakes in a year: January, May, July, September & November
- ALL new students will need to complete a "Kendo Beginner’s Course", which runs for a total of 4 months. You will be provided a One FREE TRIAL sessions (to be determined by MKC) to ‘experience’ basic Kendo training before committing to the "Kendo Beginner’s Course".

How much do I need to pay for after the 1st year to Mynichi Kendo Club?
1. Annual subscription :
*NOTE: All training fees are collected for the entire fiscal year in the first week of January OR upon completion of the "Kendo Beginner’s Course". It is the responsibility initiative of the member to settle all fees as soon as possible to the Treasurer of Mynichi Kendo Club. Failure to do so may result in the termination of their Mynichi Kendo Club membership and barring from regular training, events, competitions, or seminars organized by MKA or its affiliates.
1. Annual subscription :
- Ordinary Member/ Associate Member: RM120.00/year
- Junior Member (below 21 years of age): RM60.00/year
- RM20.00/year (Collected annually on February 1)

How much do I have to pay for the JCKL membership?
There are two types of JCKL memberships: "Associate membership" & "Student membership". Please choose the one applicable to you.
JCKL member type : Associate (adults above 25 years old)
Admission Fee : RM200.00 (one-time payment)
Monthly Subscription : (Single) RM70.00/month
OR
: (Family - Spouse & Children below 21 years old) RM100.00/month
Deposit (*refundable) : RM550.00
Total of the above : RM820.00 (single) OR RM850.00 (Family)

What are the necessary equipment required in Kendo?
- During the "trial period", all beginners will be loaned a shinai (bamboo sword) and will be required to wear comfortable clothes (t-shirt & track pants). Training will be conducted barefooted.
*NOTE: The following prices are just estimation as most will have to be purchased online from overseas Kendo shops.
New students will only need the purchase the following AFTER the "trial period":
- RM100.00 Shinai (Bamboo sword)
- RM250.00 Kendogi & Hakama (Uniform: Kendo jacket & traditional pleated pants)
- Optional: RM50.00 Shinai bag (to store and transport shinais)
AFTER obtaining a rank of 7-kyu from grading examinations, students will be required to obtain the following:
*NOTE: Some items (tenugui, bogu bag, zekken) may be provided by the seller during the purchase of a Bogu set.
- RM1500.00+ Kendogu (simply known as Bogu) – Kendo armor that consists of the men (helmet), kote (gauntlets), dou (torso protector) & tare (waist & hip protector).
- Comes with bogu Tenugui (head cloth used under the men)
- RM50.00 Zekken (name tag worn on the tare)
- RM100.00 Bokuto (or Bokuto) – Japanese wooden sword
- Optional: RM150.00 Bogu bag (to store and transport bogu)
What are the available ranks in Kendo?
Ranks in Kendo are divided into kyu-graders and dan-graders. All new students start out with no rank (mu-kyu) until they have completed the first grading examination.
- Kyu(初級)-grades run from 10-kyu to 1-kyu.
- Dan(段)-grades run from 1-dan to 8-dan.
